Oil Filtration

What is Oil Filtration?

Oil filtration is the method of removing contamination from oil, to protect and prolong the use of the machinery/equipment that is utilising the oil and to increase time that you can effectively use the oil.

The process of filtering oil is also often referred to as oil cleaning or oil cleansing.

#1

Fluid contamination of oil is the overall number one cause of component failures.

75%

Up to 75% of all system failures are related to surface degradation that's been caused by mechanical wear.

#1

Water and particulate matter in hydraulic and lubrication systems are the leading cause of mechanical wear.

x5

Component and equipment life is extended by up to 5 times its normal life by maintaining clean, dry oil.

Oil Filtration Tips

Filtration
Couplings
Jason's Tip

Where possible fit quick release couplings to your tank outlets. This makes it quick and easy to connect your filtration equipment when you come to filter your oil.

New
Oil
Andy's Tip

It's always best to filter new oil too before use. You can filter new oil in its original containers, before adding the oil to your machinery. This ensures good clean oil is being used.

Timed
Extraction
Gary's Tip

For small volumes of oil consider draining the oil and storing it in a good clean container labelled with the oil's type. Re-fill machines with clean new oil and when the stored quantity is sufficient filter it, sample and analyse, then label the container for the oil to be re-used.

Drying
Cartridges
Peter's Tip

If it is known that there is excess water in your oil, try drying your new oil filter cartridges on a radiator for a couple of hours before using. This ensures that any moisture that may have entered the new cartridges during storage has been removed, which speeds up the water removal.

High
Filtration
Craig's Tip

When filtering tanks above head height, try to lift the filter rig to be as close to the height of the tank as possible. This reduces the return line height and prevents the loss of back pressure, speeding up the flow of the oil.

Water
Extraction
Andy's Tip

Where your oil has high water content, change the filter cartridges after two hours of operation. This ensures you efficiently absorb the highest quantity of water. Fuel or oil with a water content of 2% or 20,000ppm in 100 litres equals 2 litres of water.

Tube
Extension
Gary's Tip

Consider using a steel tube extension (19mm bore) to the suction line so that it reaches the bottom of the tank.

Oil
Viscosity
Craig's Tip

Try to filter the oil when it is warm. The viscosity of warm oil is lower than cold oil, making it much easier to filter.

ISO 4406

It is vital that new oil is filtered to adhere to ISO 4406 cleanliness codes before it is introduced to the component or machine. Unfiltered new oil is one of the major sources of contaminants.

Common Problems

Oil contamination leads to accelerated abrasive wear, corrosion of metal surfaces, increased electrical conductivity, viscosity variance, loss of lubricity, fluid additive breakdown, bearing failure and more.

To get the best results from external filtration it really is quite simple, "the longer an oil filter rig can be operated for, the cleaner the oil will become". It's not always possible to have a filter rig in operation for as long as you would like, as time constraints are inevitable in getting machinery back into operation as soon as possible; however even a small amount of time spent on filtration will be of massive benefit.

Generally external filtration relies on the ‘kidney looping’ or ‘by pass filtration’ process, the recycling of oil within the same tank or container. If this is the case then the total volume of oil within the tank or system will have to pass through the filters 7 times to complete one full pass.

For the best results the suction line should be as close to the bottom of the tank as is possible with the return line at the top of the tank. If there is a drain port fitted on the tank then if it is possible connect the suction line to this point and return to the tank top this helps to provide circulation ensuring all the oil gets filtered.

Please note: If the system is pressurised during the machine operating procedure do not attempt to filter the oil. With these systems the machine must be stopped and the pressure released under the machine/manufacturers guidelines before any connection is made for filtration. With a normal un-pressurised system the machine can be run during filtration.
